Here I’ll be reviewing several different brands of liquid eyeliner pens. All reviews are for the black shade of the liner pen.
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner Pen
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner Pen retails for $22USD at Sephora and Ulta. The liner comes in a thin black tube with a felt tip. In the cap is a pump to pump the eyeliner when the tip dries out. This eyeliner also comes in eleven other colors.
This eyeliner is quite opaque with a somewhat glossy finish. The felt tip is pointed so that it’s easy to get a sharp wing. I was able to easy draw and fill in the wing with one pass of the eyeliner. The staying power of this liner is fantastic (it is a waterproof formula) and remains comfortable to wear all day. I’ve actually gone swimming in the ocean and had this eyeliner survive.
A very precise tip and excellent lasting power
Tarte Sex Kitten Eyeliner Pen
This eyeliner is fairly opaque with a glossy finish. The tip of the liner is very pointed so drawing a sharp wing is easy — I was able to draw a very precise wing with the tip. However, the liner may require more than one pass to get the desired opacity. I was able to get this liner to reliably last for about twelve hours, after which the tip of the wing started fading.
A precise tip but doesn’t have as much lasting power
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner retails for $20USD at Sephora. The liner comes in a thin black tube with a brush tip. In the cap is a pump that can pump the tip when it starts to go dry. This liner is also available in brown.
This liner had a little more of a matte finish compared to the other eyeliners I tried with a more sheer application. I had to do several passes to get true opacity with this liner, and even then, the color was never as dark as many of the other liners. Despite the pigmentation issues, this liner has a fantastic brush tip that made drawing out a wing extremely easy. I think this tip would make it a good liner for a beginner to try out winger eyeliner. Although it took more passes, once applied, the liner stayed for around 20 hours without fading.
Very precise and easy to use but lacks pigmentation
Urban Decay Perversion Waterproof Fine-Point Eyeliner
This liner is quite opaque with a slight glossy finish. Compared to the other liners I tried, this one was one of the blackest and most opaque. The felt tip was fairly easy to use, but, in my opinion, not as fine as some of the other liners. Regardless, it was still pretty easy to get a sharp wing. My one complaint about this liner is the fact that it smudges — be sure not to touch your eyes or you will get eyeliner smudging. Despite being waterproof, I also got some running when my eyes watered. This liner lasted me about 14 hours without noticeable fading (provided I didn’t touch my eyes).
Easy to use tip and opaque coverage but prone to smudging
NXY Epic Ink Liner
NXY Epic Ink Liner comes retails for $7.99USD at Ulta. It comes in a thin black tube with a brush tip. This liner only comes in black.
This eyeliner actually has a tip very similar to Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, however, I think I slightly preferred the Kat Von D tip for being a little more precise. The brush tip on this liner is still very easy to use, though, and the pigmentation was much better than Tattoo Liner. I only needed one pass to get opaque coverage. This liner has great staying power — I’ve slept in it overnight and it survived. My one complaint is that it somewhat tugged on my eyelids, so it wasn’t always comfortable to wear.
Very pigmented with good lasting power but not the most comfortable
Physician’s Formula Eye Definer Felt Tip Marker
Physician’s Formula Eye Definer Felt Tip Marker retails for $7.99USD at Ulta. The liner comes in a silver and black tube with a stiff felt tip. This liner only comes in black.
This liner had a glossy finish with opaque coverage that only required one pass. The felt tip could draw a wing, but it was difficult to use. Because the tip was fat and stiff, I had trouble drawing a sharp wing or getting much precision, and the tip was sharp enough that it was uncomfortable to apply. This liner lasted me about 12 hours without fading.
Not very precise or easy to use with just okay lasting power
Physician’s Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner+Serum
Physician’s Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner+Serum retails for $10.99USD at Ulta. The liner comes in a thicker silver tube with a brush tip. This liner also comes in brown and ultra black.
This liner had a glossy finish with fairly opaque coverage (I suspect the ultra black version would be more opaque). The brush tip was easy to use and could draw a sharp wing. I liked the tip, but I preferred the NXY Epic Ink Liner and Kat Von D Tattoo Liner brush tips over it due to their greater precision. The formula did not smudge when I touched my eyes and resisted eye watering. I was able to get about 18 hours of wear without noticeable fading.
A nice tip with decent pigmentation and lasting power
Essence Eyeliner Pen Waterproof
Essence Eyeliner Pen Waterproof retails for $2.99USD at Ulta. It comes in a thin black tube with a felt tip. This liner only comes in black.
This liner had a glossy finish but not as opaque of coverage. I had difficulty getting complete coverage even with several passes. The felt tip was fairly precise, and I was able to draw a sharp wing. Although the formula is supposed to be waterproof, I didn’t get the lasting power I thought I would — there was fading after about 12 hours.
A precise tip but not very pigmented and just okay lasting power
